RAISED BED GARDENS

Sometimes we like to used raised bed gardens in our design. Raised bed gardens can be traced back to the Aztecs at Tenochtitian, and to the ancient Egyptians. They recognized that a garden bed raised just 6" above the path level, provided for much better drainage than an in ground bed. The best designed raised beds are 4' to 5' across, with a path in between, for easy access from both sides.

Other advantages of raised beds:

  • Raised beds warm up faster in the spring, extending your growing season on both ends of the seasons.
  • Raised beds are easier on the back to plant, weed, and harvest.
  • It's easier to add add a cover to a raised bed, such as shade cloths, remay, and plastic. These things help to protect plants and extend seasons.

You can build raised beds yourself, purchase them, usually online, or, have us build them for you. They can be built from long lasting locust wood, recycled boards, bricks, or stone. We prefer those made out of wood for the advantage of being able to add removable covers with ease.
