The Albrecht Model of Soil Fertility
rth & Spirit Design consultants prefer the Albrecht model of nurturing and maintaining good plant health. We design gardens with plants that provide continuous & periodic feedback to the soil. This eliminates the need for manual fertilization once the garden is established.
What is the Albrecht Model?
It refers to the principals developed by Dr. William Albrecht, for testing soil fertility. His model utilizes soil chemistry to affect soil physics, which determines the biological environment of the soil.
The ideal soil is composed of:
- 45% minerals
- 5% humus
- 50% pore space
Ideally, the pore space is occupied by 50% water, and 50% air. This same space should also contain the environment needed to support all types of living organisms necessary to provide the needs for plants.
It is the chemical makeup of the soil that determines its physical structure. When the soil contains the correct chemistry, the plants will be able to obtain the correct nutrients needed for healthy growth. The correct mineral content plays an important part of this.
In other words, feed the soil and let the soil feed the plants.
